Informative Review Reflection

The informative review paper consisted of informing the public about cloning in specific therapeutic and reproductive cloning. One of my main focus for the paper was to explain and inform the public about the advantages and disadvantages of cloning to the world. While writing the paper it was important for me to keep in mind that my potential audience were lay people. In other words, my audience were secondary audiences that do not have a lot or any knowledge about science. Therefore, I would have to explain any complicated terms and ideas in a simple and clear way to make sure that they understand my argument and what I was trying to imply in each paragraph. Another strategy I used to help my readers understand better my argument was that I included an image explaining the process of therapeutic and reproductive cloning because I realize that the audience would have a hard time trying to understand how the process really works.

One of the strategies I used to gather the reader’s attention in the opening paragraph was that I introduced a controversial and sad issue to make people feel empathy towards it. I then included a question telling the reader that cloning could be a way to solve the case to make the audience curious to learn how can cloning stop the harvesting of organs. Therefore, once people have felt sympathy towards the issue they would want to keep reading to see if the issue could be solved or not.

The exigence of my topic was that most of the people seen to be afraid of cloning and its consequences, therefore, in my paper I should emphasize that cloning is not really that bad and make the readers feel less afraid and more comfortable reading and talking about cloning. What motivated me to write this informative paper was, the issue of the use of aborted babies for the harvesting of organs therefore in my paper I needed to convince the public that cloning could be a way to stop this horrible act.

I have chosen an image which explains the process of therapeutic and reproductive cloning because I feel that cloning is a controversial topic and if people see the process instead of seeing strange and complicated words they would feel more comfortable with the ideas of therapeutic and reproductive cloning.

One of the strategies I used to identify the motivating issue in my sources was that I converted the first sentence of each paragraph into questions. I feel that each paragraph most of the time would present an issue or argument and then solve it. Therefore if the first sentence is a question the remaining sentences would be the answer to the question, that was how I was able to identify the motivating issue on all my sources.

The collaborative and social aspects of this writing assignment help me in different ways. First, discussing the readings that would be relevant to the paper was a great help to me because I was able to discuss and explain what I understood from the article with other people and hear their opinions too. Also doing this is really helpful because if you misunderstood any concept or paragraph you can discuss it with your peers or the professor to check if your interpretation was correct or not. Also, the peer reviews were very helpful because my peer notices some grammar errors that I was not able to recognize.

To complete my assignment I used the articles provided by the professor because I felt that those articles were the ones who helped understand better cloning and its issues, therefore, I realize that those articles would also help my audience understand and feel less afraid about cloning. I also used the City College of New York database to find the scholarly articles that I needed to understand more the issue of cloning and also to include in my paper. I choose the source I did because I felt that they helped me understand better which were the ethical issues of cloning because most of the sources from the class helped understand cloning and its process but did not provide to me some of the main ethical issues.

One of the strategies I used to understand the articles that I was supposed to read for homework to then included in my paper was that I wrote next to most of the paragraphs the main issue and then at the end I only read each main issue aloud to understand what the paper was really about and which were the main concerns in the articles. I also look up the definitions of some words, because sometimes if you do not understand an important word that is in a sentence you could interpret it wrong. Also, I read the articles several times because I notice that when you read something more than once every time you read it again you would understand more the article or would find a new interpretation of what you already read.

One piece of evidence that supports my claim that the cloning of humans should not be stopped is because the reasons provided by most opponents of cloning are not based on facts. “Dolly the Sheep was the first healthy cloned mammal created through fission and somatic cell nuclear transfer, “SCNT is a technique in which the nucleus of a somatic cell is transferred to the cytoplasm of an enucleated egg.”5 Sadly, Dolly died of progressive lung disease when she was 6 years old but it had nothing to do with the fact that she was a cloned.6 Therefore, if Dolly who was created through reproductive cloning was able to live and die like any other animal, why should not a human clone created through reproductive cloning have the same experience?” Dolly the Sheep was a born healthy mammal who was created with the use of cloning that is a fact, therefore if cloning turned out good for mammals there is a possibility that it might turn out good for humans too.
